I need an attorney to help with a custody/child support matter. I have physical custody of the kids; mom has substance abuse issues and has been out of the home for at least 5 years. Mom owes me about $8K in child support, mom now trying to get more visitation with kids. What should I do?
Attorney answer:
In this situation, if the parties can meet together, I recommend mediation. A mediator can help create a safe, secure setting where these folks can communicate effectively to develop skills and strategies for planning a future parenting schedule. I favor the mediation process because the strengths and abilities of each parent can be identified to support and develop a safe plan that is “child focused.” It is also less expensive. Best wishes.
